What is the TCF Canada exam?

The Test de connaissance du français (TCF Canada) is one of the two French exams IRCC accepts for Express Entry, PR and citizenship. It tests listening, reading, writing and speaking in a single sitting, and your scores convert to NCLC levels, which is the only number IRCC looks at.

  • Run by: France Éducation International, the French government’s international-education agency
  • Skills tested: listening, reading, writing and speaking, all in one day
  • Result: a score per skill, converted to an NCLC level; there is no pass or fail
  • Used for: Express Entry French points, category-based draws, PNP streams and citizenship

French remains one of the largest sources of extra points in Express Entry: NCLC 7 in all four skills is worth up to 50 additional CRS points and opens French-language category draws. Our guide to learning French for Canadian PR walks through the CRS math.

Where can you take the TCF in Toronto?

Alliance Française Toronto is the established TCF centre in the GTA. Its main campus is at 24 Spadina Rd, and it also operates campuses in North York, Mississauga and Oakville. The campus for your sitting is confirmed when you register.

Availability changes through the year, so treat the official listings as the source of truth: the TCF Canada page at France Éducation International lists approved centres, and Alliance Française’s exams page carries the current Toronto calendar.

If you live outside the city, it is worth checking the North York, Mississauga and Oakville campuses as well; their dates sometimes open up when the Spadina campus is full.

How do you book the TCF in Toronto?

You register directly with the test centre, not with IRCC. GTA sittings fill 4–8 weeks ahead, so book as soon as your target month opens rather than waiting until you feel ready.

  1. Pick your date on the centre’s exam calendar.
  2. Register and pay through the centre’s website. Use the exact name on your passport or PR card.
  3. Save the confirmation. It states your campus, arrival time and ID requirements.
  4. On test day, bring the same ID you registered with and arrive early; late candidates are not seated.
  • Registration windows: Alliance Française opens registration in windows through the year, and popular dates go quickly
  • In person only: for immigration purposes the TCF cannot be taken online from home
  • Timing tip: results take 2–3 weeks, so count backwards from any Express Entry deadline before choosing a date

How much does the TCF cost in Toronto?

There is no national fee. Each approved centre sets its own price, and GTA centres typically charge $400 or more per sitting. The exact current fee is shown at registration.

  • Fee: ≈ $400+ per sitting in the GTA
  • Retakes: full fee again, after a 20-day wait
  • Budget note: TEF Canada costs about the same, so price rarely decides between the two exams

TCF Canada exam format

The TCF Canada takes 2 hours 47 minutes in total, all in one day at the centre. Questions in listening and reading are ordered from easiest to hardest, which many candidates find less stressful than a flat format.

  • Listening: 39 questions · 35 min (audio plays once, no replays)
  • Reading: 39 questions · 60 min
  • Writing: 3 short tasks · 60 min (60–120, 120–150 and 120–180 words)
  • Speaking: 3 tasks · 12 min, face-to-face with an examiner (includes 2 min of prep time)

The first speaking task is a guided introduction and follows the same pattern at every sitting. Rehearsing it gives you a calm start; the examiner’s recording begins with your strongest minutes instead of your most nervous ones.

What TCF score do you need for Canada PR?

For maximum Express Entry French points, you need NCLC 7 in all four skills. On the TCF that means 453+ in reading, 458+ in listening, and 10 out of 20 in both writing and speaking.

What those points are worth:

  • 25 CRS points for NCLC 7 in all four French abilities (IRCC’s CRS grid)
  • 50 CRS points when you also hold CLB 5 or higher in English
  • French category draws with much lower cut-offs than general draws

For citizenship the bar is much lower: NCLC 4 or higher in speaking and listening only, for applicants aged 18–54. A note many students find encouraging: NCLC 7 in TCF writing and speaking is 10 out of 20, which examiners describe as solid B2 communication with errors that do not block understanding.

Should you take the TCF or the TEF?

IRCC accepts both exams equally, and both convert to the same NCLC levels. Most of our students find the TCF slightly easier: its sections are shorter, its questions ramp up gradually, and its writing asks for three short pieces instead of two long ones.

The better choice still depends on your own strengths. Strong essay writers and confident conversationalists often score higher on the TEF. Our full TEF vs TCF comparison goes section by section, and if you land on the TEF, the TEF Canada guide covers its format, fees and booking the same way this page does for the TCF.

Availability matters too. Since the two tests carry identical weight, an earlier open date in Toronto is a perfectly good reason to pick one over the other.

How to prepare for the TCF in Toronto

Starting from a solid B1, most learners need 3–6 months of structured preparation to reach NCLC 7 reliably. Writing and speaking are where candidates most often fall one level short, and where corrected practice makes the fastest difference.

  • Listening: practise with the audio played once only, no pauses; that condition surprises more first-time candidates than the content does
  • Writing: drill all three task lengths against the clock, and get every practice piece corrected
  • Speaking: rehearse the guided introduction, then practise defending an opinion for four to five minutes without stopping
  • Mocks: in the final month, sit full timed practice tests and score them against the NCLC 7 bands above

Toronto French Academy prepares students for both the TCF and the TEF. Our French classes in Toronto run mornings and late evenings, and private tutoring suits candidates on a tight test date. Book a demo class to start with a diagnostic and a clear plan.

How much does the TCF cost in Toronto?

Each centre sets its own fee. GTA centres typically charge $400 or more per sitting; the exact current fee is shown when you register.

How often are TCF test dates in Toronto?

Sessions run through the year, but GTA sittings fill 4–8 weeks ahead. Check the Alliance Française exam calendar and book as soon as your target month opens.

Can I take the TCF in North York or Mississauga?

Alliance Française operates campuses in North York, Mississauga and Oakville as well as at Spadina Rd. Sittings are assigned by campus, so check which locations host your date when you register.

What TCF score do I need for Canada PR?

NCLC 7 in all four skills: reading 453–498, listening 458–502, and 10–11 out of 20 in both writing and speaking. That earns 25 CRS points, or 50 with CLB 5+ English, plus eligibility for French category draws.

Is TCF Canada accepted for Express Entry?

Yes. TCF Canada is fully accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, PNP and all PR programs, with identical weight to TEF Canada.

Is the TCF easier than the TEF?

For most candidates, slightly. TCF sections are shorter, questions ramp from easy to hard, and its three writing tasks are more compact. Strong writers and confident speakers often prefer the TEF. Both convert to the same NCLC levels.

Can I retake the TCF?

Yes, after a 20-day wait, and you pay the full fee again. Most near-misses reach NCLC 7 on the second attempt once preparation focuses on the skill that fell short.

Can I take the TCF online from home?

No. For immigration purposes the TCF must be taken in person at an approved test centre.

Does the TCF have a pass or fail?

No. Each skill gets a score that converts to an NCLC level, and IRCC awards points based on that level.

How long are TCF results valid?

Two years from the results date, and they must still be valid on the day you submit your PR application.

Can I use the TCF for Canadian citizenship?

Yes. Citizenship requires NCLC 4 or higher in speaking and listening only, for applicants aged 18–54, which is well below the PR target.
