Who runs what

Who administers the TEF Canada — and who takes the booking?

Le français des affaires (LFDA), part of CCI Paris Île-de-France, administers TEF Canada; approved centres handle dates, payment, confirmations, convocations and policy. Toronto French Academy is a prep school, not a test centre: we prepare candidates and book nothing — this directory is independent, checked centre by centre against the official LFDA registration system.

Use the Le français des affaires centre finder — not the France Éducation international list

!

Booking warning: use the official LFDA centre finder and the francais.cci-paris-idf.fr portal. France Éducation international lists DELF, DALF and TCF centres — not authoritative TEF Canada centres. TCF approval is not TEF approval.

Which TEF Canada option should a permanent-residence applicant select?

Permanent-residence applicants must select reading, listening, writing and speaking in one session; citizenship applicants need listening and speaking together. Neither is necessarily cheapest — that is how the wrong option gets bought. Check IRCC’s requirements before checkout.

Step by step

How to book the TEF Canada exam, step by step

Follow the screenshots below to book your TEF Canada exam in Toronto. This is one example — other sites look a little different, but they ask for the same things in much the same order. Keep your passport beside you; most of this form is copying it correctly.

TEF Canada registration form asking whether you have reported to the TEF before, with a previous test date field
Step 1

Answer the “previous test” question

The form first asks whether you have ever reported to the TEF. If you have taken the TEF before, tick the box and enter your previous test date. If this is your first attempt, leave it blank and move on.

Test module selection on the TEF Canada booking form showing all four modules and the running total price
Step 2

Select all four test modules

For permanent residence you need all four — listening, reading, writing and speaking. Do not make the mistake of selecting just one or two modules: IRCC requires a single complete exam and only looks at your most recent result, and you cannot retake a single module on its own later.

Personal information section of the TEF Canada booking form: name, gender, date of birth, country of birth, nationality and passport number
Step 3

Enter your details exactly as they appear in your passport

First name and last name spelled exactly as printed in your passport, and your passport number copied correctly, character by character. Use the exact address where you currently live. A booking that does not match your ID can cause problems on test day.

Contact and additional information on the TEF Canada booking form with purpose of exam set to Immigration to Canada and keyboard set to QWERTY
Step 4

Set the purpose of exam — and the keyboard

This one matters. If you are taking the TEF for permanent residency, the purpose must be Immigration to Canada — not Citizenship, not immigration to another country, and not Immigration to Quebec. For the keyboard, we recommend QWERTY — make sure it is selected before you continue.

Upload documents step of the TEF Canada booking form asking for a copy of your passport
Step 5

Upload the first page of your passport

Usually the only document required. Upload a clear copy of the first page — the one with your photo, name and passport number. You do not need to upload the entire passport.

Booking summary before payment on the TEF Canada registration form: exam format, location, date, group and oral times, and total price
Step 6

Review everything, then pay

Before you press Confirm & Pay, check the summary carefully: all four modules, your name spelling, passport number, and the date, time and location you meant to book. Note that your oral (speaking) time is listed separately from the group test time. Once payment goes through, save the confirmation.

Where can you take the TEF Canada? Verified centres across Canada

You can take TEF Canada at the 36 centres below — 35 resolved in LFDA’s registration system on August 25, 2026, plus GB Language Centre in North York, an accredited centre that runs registration on its own platform, verified August 30, 2026. A dash means no cadence was stated — not that sessions do not exist. Recheck the booking page before paying; entries are not rankings. Each row’s pattern and notes are as published by the centre named in that row. Booking links go to the centre’s page on the official LFDA registration portal — or, where the notes say so, to the centre’s own registration site.

Where no centre is currently listed

Prince Edward Island, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut had no LFDA-listed centre on August 25, 2026; that may change. Recheck before travelling. Alternatives are Moncton or Halifax from PEI, and Whitehorse, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver or Winnipeg from the territories. Several websites advertise TEF seats without a resolvable official record — if a centre is not in this table, verify it on the official finder before handing over money.

The question everyone asks

Can the TEF Canada be taken online?

No.

Reading, listening and writing are computer-based at an approved centre; speaking is face-to-face and recorded. Registration and preparation can be online. The exam cannot.

“Computer-based” does not mean “from home”

“Computer-based” describes the centre’s testing setup, not remote access.

Money

How much does the TEF Canada exam cost?

Fees are set by each centre; there is no national price. Only its current checkout confirms your total. These are examples, not a tariff — a dash means no four-component total was published.

What can change the total

Taxes, administration charges and component add-ons may change checkout; no uniform treatment was published when checked. Separately total travel, accommodation, transport and time off. The cheaper exam can produce the costlier trip.

Refunds, transfers, cancellations and missed exams

The paid centre’s written policy controls refunds, transfers, cancellations and absences under LFDA conditions; no national refund rule exists. Read and save it before checkout. If a term is unpublished, ask in writing before paying.

Timing

When do TEF Canada dates open, and how fast do seats fill?

There is no national calendar: each centre controls registration windows and capacity.

Centres are heavily booked these days, and last-minute spots are rare. Book at least two to three months before your target exam date — and do not check a single platform and assume everything is full. TEF Canada sessions are hosted by several different platforms and providers, so look across a few before giving up on a date.

Registration windows are set centre by centre

Toronto opened quarterly blocks roughly one month ahead — December 2, 2025, then March 2, May 20 and August 17, 2026 — with no waiting list, as published by Alliance Française de Toronto, checked August 25, 2026. This dated pattern is not a promise. Collège Dawson listed October 16, November 13 and December 11, 2026; Université de Montréal listed Laval and Brossard dates from September through December; CESTAR published Thursday-to-Saturday availability — all as published by those centres, checked August 25, 2026.

How quickly can a session sell out?

No verified national sell-out speed exists. Edmonton displayed sold-out September sessions, and Toronto removes full sessions and has no waiting list, as published by those centres, checked August 25, 2026. Candidate reports checked that day described October–December inventory disappearing, including during payment. Reports are not statistics.

Booking-day checklist for high-demand releases

  • Prepare an account where the centre uses one; this was not published uniformly when checked.
  • Convert the opening time to your time zone.
  • Have exact ID details and an accepted payment method ready.
  • Use one tab.
  • Save every confirmation.
  • After a timeout, check whether the booking went through before paying again.

Plan B

What if every TEF Canada seat is full?

If every suitable seat is full, widen the search without buying the wrong exam.

  1. Recheck the LFDA finder for every reachable city and date range.
  2. Search neighbouring provinces and price the full trip.
  3. Record each centre’s next release time and method: page, calendar or mailing list.
  4. Ask in writing about cancellation rechecks. Toronto has no waitlist and advises rechecking. Follow site rules.
  5. Book the next viable window and plan preparation backwards.
  6. Buy travel only after written confirmation.
  7. Allow for results, the 20-day retake floor and buffer before your immigration deadline.
  8. Never substitute TEFAQ, generic TEF or two modules merely because seats exist.

Identity

What ID is required for registration and exam day?

Use valid original photo ID matching your registration and immigration file.

Before paying: match the booking to your immigration ID

Enter the legal name, birth date and document details on your immigration photo ID. Check accents, hyphens, name order and digits. An abbreviation can cause trouble at the door.

What to bring on test day

Bring the valid original ID named at registration and your convocation. Copies and expired ID do not substitute. Additional requirements were not published uniformly when checked; confirm before test day.

What happens during identity verification

Staff check identity, take a photo and signature, and record the speaking test under LFDA’s conditions. Phones stay off; references are barred. Mismatched or expired ID risks admission and the fee.

Accessibility accommodations come before registration

Request accommodations from the centre before paying. Its process and evidence rules were not published uniformly when checked. Do not assume later changes are possible.

Results

When will TEF Canada results arrive?

LFDA says results normally arrive within one to ten business days by email as a secure digital certificate; no paper certificate is issued (LFDA guidance, checked August 25, 2026). Centres may quote longer estimates, but no centre-published TEF timeline was verified when checked — confirm any local claim on the centre’s own TEF page. Verification can delay release. For CLB conversion, use our TEF score chart.

What if results miss the window?

Check spam, then contact the centre with your name, exam date, candidate number and receipt. Confirm the address and ask about verification. If unresolved, request its LFDA escalation path.

Planning an immigration deadline around results

Plan backwards: allow one to ten business days, a possible delay, 20 days before a same-component retake, and time to update the application. A deadline without buffer is hope wearing a calendar.

Retakes

Booking a TEF Canada retake: the 20-day waiting rule

20

Retake rule: allow at least 20 days between attempts at the same component across TEF versions; LFDA may cancel a breach (conditions, checked August 25, 2026). Centres may be stricter — Regina requires 30 days, as published by La Cité universitaire francophone, checked August 25, 2026. Follow the longer rule.

What is the earliest eligible retake date?

After a September 1 attempt, September 21 is the earliest eligible date. It is not an available seat. Check for a longer centre rule before paying.

Can a PR applicant retake only the module they missed?

Federal immigration requires four modules from one session, not mixed attempts. If a centre sells components, confirm in writing how the certificate fits your application before paying. Change the preparation too; identical preparation buys an expensive replay.

FAQ

TEF Canada booking FAQ

These short answers settle common pre-payment booking questions.

Where can I book the TEF Canada exam in Canada?

Book directly with a centre approved in LFDA’s finder and official portal, or with an accredited centre that registers candidates on its own site. The directory above contains 36 centres, last updated August 30, 2026. Recheck before paying because approval and availability change; compare the required modules, venue, date and local rules.

Is there one official TEF Canada booking website?

No single checkout sells every Canadian session. LFDA supplies the authoritative finder and registration portal, while each centre controls calendars, payment, confirmation and policy. Start with LFDA, then use the centre’s official path. IRCC and France Éducation international sell no TEF Canada seats.

How much is the TEF Canada exam in Canada?

There is no national fee. Published four-component examples checked August 25, 2026 ranged from $380 to $490, but only current checkout confirms your final total. Check taxes and administration charges, then add travel, accommodation and time away from work separately.

When do new TEF Canada test dates open?

Dates open on each centre’s schedule, not a national release day. Centres use quarterly blocks, dated calendars or mailing lists. A previous pattern is dated evidence, not a promise. Record the time zone and reopen the current calendar before release.

Why are all the TEF Canada sessions sold out?

Centre capacity and registration windows vary, so demand can exceed displayed seats; no national fill-speed statistic exists. Edmonton showed sold-out sessions, while Toronto removes full sessions and has no waitlist, as published by those centres, checked August 25, 2026. Search reachable cities and cancellations.

Can I take the TEF Canada online from home?

No. Reading, listening and writing use computers at an approved centre; speaking is face-to-face and recorded. Registration and preparation may be online, but remote-proctored TEF Canada testing is not offered anywhere. “Computer-based” means centre-based testing, never a private home exam.

What ID do I need to book and take the TEF Canada?

Use valid original photo ID and copy its details exactly during registration. Bring the same document and your convocation. Match legal name, birth date and document details to the immigration file. Ask before paying about local requirements, which are not published uniformly.

How long does it take to get TEF Canada results?

LFDA says results normally arrive within one to ten business days. The secure digital certificate comes by email; no paper certificate is issued. Centre estimates may be longer, and verification can delay release. Check spam, then contact the centre with your candidate number and receipt.

How soon can I retake the TEF Canada?

Wait at least 20 days between attempts at the same component across TEF versions. Regina requires 30 days, as published by La Cité universitaire francophone, checked August 25, 2026. Count from the component attempt, then confirm eligibility and seat availability before booking.

Can I book only the TEF section I failed?

Some centres sell individual components, but permanent-residence applicants need four modules from one session. Never assume a single-module retake combines with earlier results. Before paying, ask in writing how the new certificate works for your immigration application and verify your pathway’s rule.
